AUGUSTA — Whenever he was needed, Abel Alemayo took control Monday night, scoring 23 points to lead fourth-seeded Waynflete to a 66-47 win against No. 5 Wiscasset in a Class A South boys’ basketball quarterfinal at the Augusta Civic Center.

“He’s the floor general,” Waynflete Coach Rich Henry said. “He’s the one that sets the tempo both emotionally and how we distribute the ball on our offense. He plays within himself and he makes everyone else better.”

A senior point guard, Alemayo made the Flyers (17-2) look very good against the Wolverines (13-6).

“We threw about everything we had at them defensively, and they’re just so disciplined, a very tough team,” Wiscasset Coach Dana Lawrence said.

“I think we matched up OK, but in quickness they had a big advantage there. They’ve got the full package, and they’re very disciplined on what they’re doing.

The Flyers, who play Dirigo Thursday night in a semifinal contest, ended the first quarter with a 14-4 run to move into a 20-12 lead. They hit four 3-pointers during the first seven minutes of the game.

“We shot the ball well,” Henry said. “I preach to these kids the importance of a taking a good (3-point shot), to get the ball moving to get the defense moving before we take the 3.”

Waynflete hit four of its first five shots in the second quarter to open up a 31-17 lead.

The Flyers, who made six 3-pointers in the first half, carried a 31-17 lead into the third quarter.

Ethan James, a 6-foot-6 junior center who scored a game-high 31 points, tried to keep Wiscasset in the game. He stepped outside and hit five 3-pointers.

The Wolverines managed to pull to within 10 points four times during the third quarter but could get no closer.

Alemayo ended Wiscasset’s last rally by making his fourth 3-pointer of the game and finishing off a drive down the lane with a three-point play to make it 49-33 with 36 seconds left in the quarter.

“When he’s shooting the ball and he’s getting guys to come out on him, it opens everything up, really,” said Milo Belleau, a senior forward who scored 19 points for the Flyers.

Alemayo just kept his cool.

“In practice for the most part, we’ve been working on keeping our composure during a game, not getting caught up if we have a bad play or a bad shot,” he said.

Waynflete finished the game with an 11-2 run.

“I was really pleased with the way the kids played considering we hadn’t played in seemingly forever,” Henry said.

The Flyers hadn’t played a game since finishing the regular season Feb. 4 with a 67-41 win against Sacopee Valley.
