Nadal out of Wimbledon to give wrist time to heal

Rafael Nadal pulled out of Wimbledon on Thursday, citing the left wrist injury that forced him out of the French Open.

Nadal, a two-time Wimbledon champion, said on his Facebook page that he made the decision after consulting with his doctor and receiving his latest medical results.

“I won’t be able to play at Wimbledon this year,” the fourth-ranked Spaniard said. “As you can all imagine, it’s a very tough decision, but the injury I suffered at Roland Garros needs time to heal.”

NOTTINGHAM OPEN: Second-seeded Johanna Konta of Britain bowed out in the second round in England when she lost to Saisai Zheng of China, 6-4, 7-5.

HOCKEY

GUILTY PLEA: A former minor league hockey player accused of selling prescription painkillers to a former hockey player who died of an accidental overdose pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor drug charge.

Jordan Hart entered the plea in Manhattan federal court. The Huntington, New York, resident was arrested in September 2014 after the accidental overdose death of Derek Boogaard of the New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild.

RED WINGS: John Torchetti, the former interim coach of the Minnesota Wild, was hired to join Coach Jeff Blashill’s staff.

COLLEGES

IVY LEAGUE: The league adopted two rules that will further limit time demands on athletes.

The first change gives athletes a 10-hour window of no athletic activity following a road trip. The second requires a two-week recovery period with no allowable team athletic activity upon the completion of a team’s final game of the season.

CONCUSSION SUITS: Ray Griffin, the brother of two-time Ohio State Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin, is one of the plaintiffs in the latest batch of lawsuits against the NCAA filed by former college players who said they suffer the effects of concussions.

OLYMPICS

DRUG TESTS: Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko denied allegations in a German documentary that he intervened to conceal a soccer player’s positive drug test, dismissing the report as “laughable” and “implausible.”

The documentary, aired Wednesday night by German broadcaster ARD, showed what it said were Mutko’s initials on a document as proof that the minister helped to cover up a positive test of an unidentified player of the Krasnodar soccer team.

BISLETT GAMES: Andre de Grasse of Canada won the 100 meters in 10.07 seconds, with three Americans finishing right at Oslo, Norway.

Michael Rodgers was second in 10.09, followed by Dentarius Locke in 10.12 and Ameer Webb in 10.18.

SOCCER

COPA AMERICA: Lionel Messi of Argentina will return to the field Friday night against Panama after being sidelined for his country’s opener by a back injury.

Messi left in the second half of a 1-0 victory against Honduras on May 27 with a back and rib injury. He watched as top-ranked Argentina beat Chile 2-1 on Monday night.

Salomon Rondon scored on a rebound after a shot from midfield struck the crossbar and Venezuela beat Uruguay 1-0 at Philadelphia to advance to the quarterfinals.

WRESTLING

U.S. WITHDRAWS: The U.S. junior wrestling team withdrew from a regional championship this month in crisis-wracked Venezuela over security concerns.

Gary Abbott, a spokesman for USA Wrestling, said there was uncertainty about transport from the capital Caracas to the tournament venue in the central city of Barinas.

BASEBALL

NECBL: Casey Baker hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Mystic Schooners to a 5-4 win over the Sanford Mainers at Groton, Connecticut.

Shaine Hughes had a pair of hits and scored twice for the Mainers, who led 4-3 before Mystic tied it with a run in the bottom of the eighth.

EMPIRE LEAGUE: Chris Jacobs had two hits and drove in five runs, and Richard Colla added four hits and three RBI to lead the visiting New Hampshire Wild to a 12-5 win over the Old Orchard Beach Surge.

Shaun Cooper hit a two-run homer for the Surge.
