Edge prevails 5-0 in Twilight League game
Bailey Train lined a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday as Edge Academy shut out Aero Heating and Ventilating 5-0 at South Portland in a Twilight League baseball game.
Seth Dobieski was 2 for 4 with an RBI for Edge (6-8-1), and Mike Muise added a pair of hits and drove in a run.
Reed Mzar had a pair of hits, including a double for Aero (9-7).
• Patriot Insurance scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, led by a two-run single from Abe Granger, to beat On Target 8-3.
Christian Bourget, Tanner Laberge and Ryder Kenney each had a pair of hits for Patriot (7-8).
NECBL: Jordan Powell lined a single to left field, driving in Zach Jancarski with the go-ahead run in the 11th inning as the Sanford Mainers outlasted the Vermont Mountaineers 7-6 in 11 innings at Montpelier, Vermont.
Chris Gaetano was 2 for 5 with a three-run home run for Sanford (20-14).
CYCLING
TOUR DE FRANCE: Ilnur Zakarin won the first Alpine stage at Finhaut-Emosson, Switzerland, after using a late attack in the final climb while race leader Chris Froome increased his lead in the overall standings.
HOCKEY
NHL: Forward Brad Richards, 36, is retiring after 15 seasons during which he established a reputation for offensive consistency and won two Stanley Cup championships.
Richards finished with 298 goals and 634 assists for 932 points in 1,126 games in a career with Detroit, Dallas and the New York Rangers.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
UFC: Chad Mendes, the No. 4 ranked featherweight in the UFC, was suspended for two years by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for a banned substance.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: Seimone Augustus scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting to help the host Minnesota Lynx beat the Atlanta Dream 83-65 and win their fifth straight game.
Minnesota (20-4) has won at least 20 games in six consecutive seasons, tying the Los Angeles Sparks (1999-2004) for the longest streak in WNBA history.
• Jewell Loyd scored 25 points, Breanna Stewart added 22 points and five blocked shots as the host Seattle Storm beat the San Antonio Stars 83-69.
TENNIS
CITI OPEN: American Ryan Harrison knocked off 10th-seeded Viktor Troicki of Serbia 7-6 (4), 6-4 to reach the third round at Washington.
