Bill Nemitz has worked as a journalist in Maine since 1977, when he became a reporter for the Morning Sentinel in Waterville after graduating from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He moved to Portland in 1983, working first as a reporter for the Evening Express and later as a city editor and assistant managing editor/sports for the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram. He began writing his column in 1995. While focusing on Maine people and issues, his work has taken him three times to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan, where he was embedded with members of the Maine Army National Guard and the Army Reserve; to Belfast, Northern Ireland, for the 1998 referendum on the Good Friday Peace Accord; to Manhattan for the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks; to the Gulf Coast for the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; and to Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. Nemitz is a past president of the Maine Press Association and for many years taught journalism part-time at St. Joseph's College of Maine in Standish. He also served for eight years, including three as chairman, on the board of trustees for the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland. In 2004, the Maine Press Association named Nemitz Maine Journalist of the Year for his reporting on the Maine Army National Guard’s 133rd Engineer Battalion in Iraq. In 2007, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the New England Newspaper Association. In 2015, Nemitz was inducted into the Maine Press Association Hall of Fame. Nemitz lives in Buxton with his wife, Andrea. They have five children and four grandchildren.

Bill Nemitz: ‘Abdication’ by Maine lawmakers or seeking alternative?
Last month, in a sit-down with WCSH-TV’s Don Carrigan, Gov. Paul LePage looked back over his tumultuous first year in office and boasted, “I’m a good actor.” Maybe so. But if Maine House Speaker Robert Nutting’s current mood is any indication, the Guv’s act is starting to wear a little thin. “This was kind of […]

Bill Nemitz: Dave Astor, a man who saw the future in the young
It’s been almost five years since that day my phone rang and the gravelly voice on the other end said, “Hi, Bill. This is Dave Astor calling.” I recognized the name — long after his final “For Teenagers Only” show aired on WCSH in 1971, Astor remained a legend throughout a community that for 15 […]

Bill Nemitz: Outpouring of grief for pastor suddenly interrupted
Maybe there should be a rule when it comes to high-profile suicides: Before we know exactly what happened and why, the less said the better. This much appears certain as Maine reels from the death of the Rev. Robert Carlson: Early Sunday morning, the well-known pastor and founder of two Bangor-area service agencies parked his […]

Bill Nemitz: Living with wounds of war, a Maine man uses school ‘to help me become me again.’
It’s the kind of stuff you’d expect from a University of Southern Maine philosophy major — a long, introspective research paper celebrating the natural wonders of Maine through the transcendental lens of Ralph Waldo Emerson. “To this day when I am out fly fishing, I will always at least once sit down somewhere on the […]

Bill Nemitz: Take ad at its word: Beware ‘outsiders’
You know you’re on the wrong side of an issue when you’re afraid to call it by name. Over the last few days, Maine’s airwaves have been bombarded by a 15-second television ad urging a “no” vote on Question 1 in Tuesday’s referendum election. Question 1, as most of us know, involves Maine’s tradition of […]

Bill Nemitz: Mayoral vote easy as 1-2-3. Or not …
I don’t know about you, but I’m buying a jumbo bucket of popcorn for next week’s Portland mayoral election. “Get here early – to claim your spot,” advised City Hall spokeswoman Nicole Clegg on Thursday. “It will be very dramatic.” Not to mention time-consuming. This much we can predict about the 15-candidate contest to become […]

Bill Nemitz: ‘Main’ lobster turns into the principal beef
What might Maine maple syrup soon have that the venerable Maine lobster doesn’t? Ironclad brand protection, that’s what. We begin with the syrup: This week, MaineToday Media Washington Bureau Chief Jonathan Riskind reported on a bill now in the congressional pipeline that would make it a federal felony to sell fake maple syrup as the […]
