SCARBOROUGH — Julie Kukenberger has been selected as the next superintendent of schools.

Kukenberger, assistant superintendent in Haverhill, Massachusetts, will succeed George Entwistle III, who is retiring at the end of June.

Her appointment was announced in a School Board press release embargoed for release after a press conference scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 15.

Chairwoman Donna Beeley said the board, which must still negotiate a contract with Kukenberger, voted unanimously to hire her.

“Julie Kukenberger has excellent credentials and experience,” Beeley said in the press release. “She is an excellent choice to continue the amazing growth that has occurred under Dr. Entwistle.”

Kukenberger said she is “energized by the passion and dedication of the School Board and educators in Scarborough.”

Kukenberger has also been a classroom teacher, principal and director of curriculum and instruction. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, a master’s degree in educational administration, and is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership.

She was one of three finalists for position. The other two were Craig King, superintendent in Regional School Unit 10 (Rumford), and Brooke Clenchy, senior associate commissioner of education for the state of Massachusetts.
