Average net cost of in-state college tuition at a 4-year, public institution
A report released by the U.S. Dept. of Education indicates that the average net cost of a year at a 4-year, public institution varies widely by state. In Maine, the University of Southern Maine and Maine Maritime Academy were among the schools with the highest net cost in the country. The average net cost was generated by subtracting the average amount of federal, state, local and institutional grants and scholarships from total cost of attendance. The cost of attendance includes tuition, required fees, books and supplies, room and board, and other expenses. The cost is for a full-time, undergraduate student who receives federal, state or institutional grants or scholarships.
