Letter to the editor: Dropping of ‘Non Sequitur,’ shrinking of ‘Doonesbury’ decried

I endorse the opinion of David Moltz (“Letter to the editor: Topical wit now scarce on comics pages,” March 24). Humor, even trenchant, helps shed light on current events. The serious comic dropped helped enlighten us. Bring “Non Sequitur” back – and make “Doonesbury” legible. Bill Gannon Scarborough

Letter to the editor: ‘Macanudo’ poor replacement for ‘Non Sequitur’

I am writing to express my sincere lack of appreciation of the recent change you have made to your comics pages. Specifically: Replacing the terrific cartoon “Non Sequitur” with the new and lousy cartoon “Macanudo.” “Non Sequitur” was an excellent, humorous cartoon series, both the daily and weekend versions. Some strips were simple and funny. […]

Letter to the editor: Replace broken system with health care for all

Jonathan McKane finishes his recent guest editorial (“Another View: Give free market a chance to ease health care expenses,” March 17) with the statement that ours is “the best health care system in the world.” A simple internet search shows that to be false. That untruth casts serious doubt on all the preceding arguments. It’s […]

Letter to the editor: Renters in Maine need more legal protection

A bill requiring landlords to give more notice of rent hikes and no-cause evictions would help tenants in a tight market.

Letter to the editor: Call out Trump for continued attacks on late war hero

As a twice-decorated veteran who oscillates between pro and con when it comes to our draft-evading president, I can forgive that along with forgiving Jane Fonda, aka “Hanoi Jane.” What is hard to forgive is Donald Trump’s tirade about the Honorable John McCain. I wish Trump had remained silent on the subject. I know that’s […]

Letter to the editor: Elite schools’ mystique aside, good students succeed anywhere

Elite schools have a claim on our imagination that may have outlived its usefulness. There are many stories about the mental anguish that high school students experience during the college admissions process. The pressure to get excellent grades and pad their resumes with many extracurricular activities has led to an epidemic of anxiety and depression. […]

Letter to the editor: Popular-vote bill would cost Mainers their independent voices

Maine has always thought of itself as an independent state, whose citizens can decide what is best for Maine and its citizens. The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which is currently being considered by our Legislature, does not support these values. The compact requires that Maine voters and Electoral College votes follow the national popular […]

Letter to the editor: Maine legislators wasting time on trivia

A snow-tire mandate, a 'Staycationland' license plate, a different state flag – do they not have enough to do?

Letter to the editor: Newspaper fails to check facts in letter on CMP worker safety

Alec Ferguson of Kennebunkport, an obvious opponent of New England Clean Energy Connect, wrote, in a letter published March 21, about a supposed encounter with a Central Maine Power lineworker, working alone in Saco, who indicated that this was a new, dangerous practice that had somehow been encouraged by Iberdrola S.A. – the majority shareowner […]

Letter to the editor: What’s in the full Mueller report? Ask the Kremlin

A consequential, exhaustive and, by all accounts, credible investigation has just been concluded and is being kept under wraps. Congress, the American Civil Liberties Union and more than half the country are clamoring to see it. “Russia, if you’re listening, can you get us a copy of the Mueller report?” Jane Card Cape Porpoise
