Letter to the editor: For progress on health care, hunger and the economy, vote Janet Mills for governor
Here’s why I’m voting for Democrat Janet Mills: She’ll expand Medicaid, as approved by Maine voters. We have had far too many delays under Republican leadership. She’ll help boost Maine’s economy with forward-thinking policies such as investing in research and development. She’ll improve the lives of lower-income Mainers by increasing access to food. It is […]

Letter to the editor: Most political donations hoping for a quid pro quo, Sen. Collins
It is stunning to hear Sen. Susan Collins complain about the “Be a Hero” campaign to influence her to vote against the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Collins stated, “I consider this quid pro quo fundraising to be the equivalent of an attempt to bribe me to vote against Judge Kavanaugh.” Does […]

Letter to the editor: Threat to fight senator’s re-election in order to affect her vote may backfire
Those people who believe that Sen. Susan Collins will be swayed into voting a certain way by threatening her with money for her unknown 2020 opponent may actually cause her to react in the exact opposite way, like many Mainers would, simply to make a point. I can only assume that the people behind this […]

Letter to the editor: Women and girls depending on Collins to oppose Kavanaugh confirmation
I am unsure whether Sen. Susan Collins understands how upset her constituents are that she is not listening to them! We are trying to tell her we want her to oppose Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court. The lives of women and girls literally depend on this. It’s upsetting to me that a spokeswoman for […]

Letter to the editor: Court nominee appears to be unaware of how contraception works
While reading Bill Nemitz’s Sept. 9 column in the Portland Press Herald, I came upon the following: “(Supreme Court nominee Brett) Kavanaugh in his testimony … referred to contraceptives as ‘abortion-inducing drugs’ while describing a case involving insurance coverage for all forms of birth control.” Sen. Susan Collins has indicated that she would have trouble […]

Letter to the editor: Sen. Collins’ affinity for court nominee dampens a loyalty to Maine
Long before the Maine Office of Tourism began promoting “discover your Maine thing” to Californians, I was doing just that. I’m now a grandmother with close to 50 years of great memories: hiking Acadia National Park; kayaking Beech Hill Pond; frequenting Maine blueberry, antique, craft, clam and lobster festivals; eating at lobster pounds and shacks […]

Letter to the editor: Obama takes credit for accomplishments of others, forgets his own divisiveness
The strength of the U.S. economy is due in large part to the tax and regulatory reforms implemented by the Trump administration.

Letter to the editor: Kavanaugh’s demeanor at hearings shows he will make a great justice
With all the hubbub last week around Washington, D.C., one thing kept getting through to me: Brett Kavanaugh comes across as a humble, compassionate and fair man. His reaction to the protesters and the insults hurled by Senate Judiciary Committee members are a testament to his character. During each outburst from the crowd behind him, […]

Letter to the editor: No neighborhood ‘pot shops’ in Portland, but homeless shelters and liquor OK?
So the city of Portland is developing ordinances to keep “pot shops” out of residential neighborhoods (Sept. 10). But homeless shelters and liquor sales (at mom-and-pop stores as well as big-box supermarkets) are OK. Makes you wonder. Irwin Novak Gorham

Letter to the editor: Judge Kavanaugh is also a threat to our clean air and water
While attention is currently focused on Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Trump’s pick for a Supreme Court justice, neither Congress nor the press appears to have time to notice that the world’s glaciers, including every last glacier in Montana’s Glacier National Park, are melting, and most will be gone by the end of the century. Switzerland’s glaciers […]
