Les and Bev White of Scarborough have had a very active attendance at their bird feeders and heated bird bath this winter. “Our latest visitor is this red squirrel who is making a nest in our bird house that is regularly occupied by the blue birds,” they report. “We'll see how the blue birds feel about that?”
Bruce Small of Raymond found this horned grebe wintering along the southern Maine coast. “I have seen several this winter at Pine Point in Scarborough,” he reports. “They migrate in the summer up to the arctic, where they breed and raise their young. They are fairly small birds and have a beautiful red eye, when the light hits them just right.”
Karen Reardon and her Saco neighbors got a treat on Feb. 25. “I was coming home from grocery shopping when I heard a lot of racket up in the trees across the street. A couple of crows were surrounding an eagle that was sitting up there having lunch and surveying the scene,” she reports, pointing out the crow in the top left of the photo. “A couple of other neighbors came along to see what I was watching and we all stood there for about 15 minutes. … Finally a couple, walking a dog, came along and barked at my neighbor’s dog and off he flew. … I don’t know if they have a nest around here but I have now seen eagles in the neighborhood three times in the past three months."
Les and Bev White of Scarborough have had a very active attendance at their bird feeders and heated bird bath this winter. “One regular visitor is this one legged starling. Has been visiting daily,” they report.
Ed Donnelly of Newcastle spotted this majestic bald eagle. "Anytime I drive along the Kennebec, I am on the lookout for bald eagles. I was driving through Randolph when I spotted three of them in the area around Togus Creek," he reports. "I saw this one on the ground getting a drink from an area of unfrozen water in the creek. I turned around and had to back my car down a road to be able to get the shot. It didn’t stay long so I was glad I had my camera nearby."
Ruth Mitchell got a eyeful in her Biddeford back yard near the Blandings Animal Sanctuary. “This coyote was on top of the ledge, in my patio area right, outside my sunroom. It stayed at least five minutes,” she reports.
Gwyn Tracy saw this Eastern bluebird braving the elements to hang out at her feeder during some February snow flurries.
It seems like Erik C. Jorgensen of Portland is hoping for a spring return of an old friend from a year ago. "I thought I would send this in, a photo of the raccoon we call "Begonia" who showed up periodically in our Portland backyard last spring," he reports. "It looked to me like a prom photo or a yearbook shot."
