The campaign party for Democrat Libby Mitchell is now gathering at her son Charlie Mitchell’s new business, Bayside Bowl, on Alder Street in Portland.

About a dozen supporters are in the lounge while a similar number bowled frames nearby. Shortly after the polls closed Mitchell had yet to arrive.

Phil Saucier who lives on Munjoy Hill said he thought the spot was an excellent place for a campaign party.

“There is a lot of excitement. A lot of young people will be coming and lots of families,” he said.

He said it is nice to be able to bowl while waiting for the event to get going.

“The food is delicious and there is a really good beer selection,” said Saucier.

The snacks included coconut curry chicken poppers in the shape of pineapple, tasso ham, smoked cod on flat bread with a balsamic-pork reduction, gravlax, creme fraiche dill lavash.

Saucier said he has been to many campaign parties.

“Typically if the campaign is doing poorly things wind up fairly quickly,” he said.

He said he expected tonight’s event to go long into the evening.

Saucier’s bowling partner agreed.

“I think it won’t be done early. There are a lot of good candidates in the race,” said Kate Hatch
