PATTEN — A wood veneer mill in the northern Maine town of Patten is closing.
The Bangor Daily News says Shaw Industries Group Inc., of Dalton, Ga., will close the Appalachian Katahdin mill in the next several weeks, putting 18 employees out of work.
Company officials said declining market demand and rising transportation and raw material costs were among the factors in reaching the decision to close the plant.
Shaw Industries Group is the world’s largest carpet manufacturer and a leading floor covering provider. It is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
