PORTLAND – Portland surrendered just one run through 14 innings to claim a pair of victories over Westbrook, 6-1 and 1-0, in the Babe Ruth 15-year-old state final at Deering Oaks.

Nick Volger led Portland’s offense in the first game with three RBI on a double and two singles.

Portland took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double from Volger.

Westbrook tied the game in the second, but a four-run rally in the third gave Portland the lead for good. Volger had an RBI single in that rally, Tom Deane provided a sacrifice bunt and Caleb Fraser added a two-run double.

Fraser was the winning pitcher giving up five hits, while striking out four and walking five.

The second game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Luke Boyle belted a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Reichert.

Mitchell Powers pitched a completed game in the final, giving up six hits, walking one and striking out six.

Portland advances to the New England tournament at Quincy, Mass.
