SHAPLEIGH — A Shapleigh fire truck rolled over on Newfield Road tonight, trapping the female firefighter, who was driving the truck, and forcing authorities to close the road for several hours.
The Maine State Police, who are handling the investigation, said the accident, which took place just after 5 p.m. forced authorities to close the road. It is still closed as 10:20 p.m.
A Life Flight helicopter transported the firefighter, whose name was unavailable, to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Her condition is not known.
An eyewitness, who was riding a motorcycle on Newfield Road, told WGME-TV that the fire truck hit the soft shoulder of the road, causing the firefighter to lose control.
The witness said the truck spun around and went sideways before going airborne, narrowly missing four motorcyclists. No one else was in the fire truck.
