PORTLAND — Some Maine kids will get help with their back-to-school supplies.

Today, more than 100 Unum employees will stuff 1,600 backpacks for children who need supplies for the new academic year.

The employees are volunteering as part of the company’s participation in Community Service 2010, an annual national volunteer effort. It will help people in hundreds of cities across the United States.

Workers will fill the backpacks at Ruth’s Reusable Resources, which recently had its fifth annual drive to collect school supplies.
