The all-American bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich was the popular choice at the 2nd annual Sandsations Sand Sculpting contest at Crescent Beach State Park in Cape Elizabeth.

This BLT, however, wouldn’t have been too tasty: it used seaweed for the lettuce, kelp for the bacon and rose hips for the tomatoes. Sculpted by Lindy and Kyle Grigel and Lindsay and Vi Walsh, all of Falmouth, the sand creation took the People’s Choice award at the contest. The Judge’s Choice of the 14 sculptures was the “Lobstah” boat made by Jenn Doe, Bill Grabarz, and 6-month-old Will Grabarz, all of Portland; Paula Kennedy of Falmouth; Amie White, Lanie White and Christanna Cobb, all of South Portland; and Barbara Goodwin of Cape Elizabeth. The boat, traps and lobsters were all made out of sand, with the lettering created by using seashells.

Contestants paid a fee to enter and raised donations from sponsors, with proceeds going to the Birth Roots Perinatal Resource Center of Portland, a nonprofit that offers pregnancy classes, groups and resource referrals.
