AUBURN — A stretch of Maine highway that had been closed since September when it collapsed into the Androscoggin River has been reopened.
The Sun Journal of Lewiston says a new section of Route 136 detours around an area that collapsed Sept. 2 into the river, taking a crane, tons of asphalt, rocks and power lines with it. A stretch between Durham and Auburn that had been closed was reopened Monday.
As part of the project, state crews moved a house to make room for the new highway.
Some work remains to be done, including removing asphalt and gravel from the river and stabilizing the river bank.
Donna Church, owner of a local roadside business that depends on commuters’ business, said she was glad to see the road reopened.
