PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Federal funding has come through for replacing the Memorial Bridge between Kittery, Maine and Portsmouth, N.H.

U.S. senators from both states today announced that the Department of Transportation has ordered $20 million in funding for the bridge. The congressional delegation had secured a grant for the bridge replacement, but with that money in jeopardy because of proposed budget cuts, the senators turned to the transportation department, which has the authority to order funding.

Both states are ready to spend their share of the $90 million project, which is supposed to break ground in mid-2012.
