YORK — Google maps appears to be accurately identifying the town of York, after showing it to be just east of Sanford, 26 miles north of its actual location.
U.S. Rep Chellie Pingree wrote an email this morning to Google CEO Larry Page notifying him of the error and asking for it be fixed.
“I understand that online booking for some inns in York have fallen significantly because of this situation, at a time when businesses are just gearing up for the tourist season,” she wrote.
Pingree said the problem was first reported two years ago and fixed, but recently reappeared.
Wily Ritch, Pingree’s spokesman, said he received an email from Google this afternoon saying the company was working to fix the problem and appears to have done so.
