BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Songwriter George Green, who wrote lyrics for some of John Mellencamp’s biggest hits and songs for Barbra Streisand and others, died Sunday at age 59 of lung cancer, said his wife, Kathryn Green.

Green was a boyhood friend of Mellencamp and lived in Bloomington for many years.

The songs Green co-wrote with Mellencamp included the 1980s hits “Hurts So Good” and “Rain on the Scarecrow.” He also wrote the title track for Streisand’s 1997 album “Higher Ground” and songs recorded by Vanessa Williams, Hall & Oates and Ricky Skaggs.
