PORTLAND — A tidal power company has asked federal regulators for permission to test its power generation system in Maine.

Portland-based Ocean Renewable Power Co. says it has submitted a pilot license application to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for its Cobscook Bay Tidal Energy Project.

If approved, the company would launch a pilot project aimed at showing that its system can generate zero-emission energy without harming the environment. The project would be located in Maine’s Cobscook Bay near the boundary between Eastport and Lubec.
