PORTLAND — Portland police are investigating a hit and run accident that left a local man hospitalized tonight.

Lt. Gary Hutcheson said 19-year-old Eric Francis of Cumberland Avenue was hit Sunday while crossing the intersection of Cumberland and Washington avenues.

The driver of the car, which is described as a gray Ford sedan, fled the scene and remains at large. The impact of the crash broke a mirror off the car.

Francis was taken to Maine Medical Center where he was being treated for injuries that are not life-threatening.

Hutcheson said the crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. during a steady rain.
