AUGUSTA — The Maine Turnpike is predicting Columbus Day holiday weekend traffic will be about the same or a little less than last year’s.
The turnpike authority today said around 244,000 vehicles are expected to pass through the York toll gate during the long weekend.
The forecast model from the University of Southern Maine’s Center for Business and Economic Activity shows a 2.7 percent decrease in incoming traffic Friday and Saturday, and outbound traffic to be roughly equal to last year’s.
But the predictions are within the margin of error and the center’s Charles Colgan says that overall, traffic levels will probably be about the same.
Columbus Day weekend is a popular time for people to see Maine’s fall foliage. Sunny weather’s expected through the weekend.
