The former England captain, who missed most of the 2010 season because of a torn Achilles tendon, received 59.76 percent of votes from the media, players and club officials. He set up 15 goals for the Los Angeles Galaxy, which finished with the best regular-season record and plays Houston for the MLS Cup on Sunday.

The Galaxy’s Bruce Arena became the first three-time winner of coach of the year.

U.S. MEN: Carlos Bocanegra will become the 12th player to make 100 appearances for the United States when the team plays Slovenia in a friendly tonight at Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The Americans have only one win in six matches since Jurgen Klinsmann replaced Bob Bradley as coach in July, and are coming off a 1-0 loss Friday at France.
