PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — An assistant fire chief says a bystander and paramedics successfully revived a runner who went into cardiac arrest in a 10-K race in Portsmouth, N.H.
Steve Achilles said firefighters were called Saturday morning for a report of a runner who collapsed in the road and was unresponsive.
The Portsmouth Herald reports Achilles said when firefighters and paramedics arrived, they found an unidentified bystander administering CPR to the 66-year-old runner. They gave him advanced life support. By the time the man arrived at Portsmouth Regional Hospital a short time later he had a strong heart rate and was breathing on his own.
Portsmouth was holding Market Square Day and the road race on Saturday. Achilles said an extra crew was working that day because of the events.
