Daniel, Turner carry USM men’s soccer team to win

Michael Daniel scored on an assist from Kevin Deignan to break a scoreless tie in the 77th minute and lift the University of Southern Maine (1-2) to a 1-0 win over the University of New England (1-2) in men’s soccer at Biddeford.

Jeremy Turner made six saves to earn his second career shutout, and Aidan McParland recorded three saves for the Nor’easters.

UNE: Nicole Faircloth converted a penalty kick in the 13th minute to lift the University of New England women’s soccer team (1-2) to a 1-0 win over Husson (0-3) at Biddeford.

Gina Iannazzi made seven saves to record her first career shutout for the Nor’easters and Jess Poulin stopped six shots for the Eagles.

• Hayley LaPointe scored two goals, and Hannah Tavella added one goal and one assist as the University of New England (1-1) scored four times in the final 20 minutes to break open a 6-2 field hockey win over Husson (2-1) at Biddeford.

Hannah Warren, Emily Koehler and Erin Bibber scored one goal apiece for the Nor’easters, who outshot Husson 27-11.

Sabrina Vaillancourt scored both goals for the Eagles.

HOCKEY

NHL: The Ottawa Senators signed center Zack Smith to a four-year extension worth $7.55 million.

Smith, 24, is coming off a career-best season in which he had 14 goals and 26 points in 81 games.

• The Phoenix Coyotes signed forward Lucas Lessio, a second-round pick in the 2011 draft, to an entry-level contract.

Lessio, 19, had 34 goals and 25 assists in 66 games last season for the Oshawa Generals of the OHL.

CYCLING

SPANISH VUELTA: Alberto Contador made an audacious break to win the 17th stage at Camaleno, Spain, and take the overall lead from Joaquin Rodriguez.

The two-time Tour de France champion made a gutsy break more than 31 miles from the mountain finish, leaving Rodriguez behind. He crossed the finish line 2 minutes, 38 seconds ahead of the previous leader.

Contador erased Rodriguez’s 28-second lead entering the 17th stage.

SOCCER

MLS: Dimirty Imbongo scored in the 53rd minute as New England ended its winless streak at 10 matches with a 2-0 win over the Columbus Crew at Foxborough, Mass.

Imbongo, who got a rare start after Jerry Bengtson was called up with the Honduran national team, slid one into an open net after a Diego Fagundez shot smacked the right post.

Matt Reis, who made a pair of acrobatic saves seconds apart from each other in the 86th, stopped a total of three shots to preserve the Revolution’s first victory since July 8.

TENNIS

NET TECHNOLOGY: David Glass, an engineer from Knoxville, Tenn., is getting a boost from the U.S. Open, which is using his TNT Gauge System to monitor net tension.

Glass received a patent for his device in November 2010. About 7 inches long and 11/4 inches wide, it attaches to the anchor hook on the outside of a net post.

Glass, an amateur tennis player, said Wimbledon is “notorious” for very loose nets while nets at the U.S. Open were so tight the ball could bounce very high or completely out of bounds. He said “there was an inconsistency in the game.”

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Lindsey Harding scored 20 points and Angel McCoughtry came off the bench to add 15, leading the Atlanta Dream to a 71-64 win over the Indiana Fever at home.

Atlanta has won three straight under new coach Fred Williams; the third-place Dream are three games behind the Fever in the East.

• Plenette Pierson scored 17 points to lead New York as the Liberty cruised to an 87-59 win over the Phoenix Mercury in Newark, N.J.

Kara Braxton and Alex Montgomery added 12 points each to help New York (11-16) move a half-game ahead of Chicago for the fourth and last playoff spot in the East.

MARTIAL ARTS

UFC: Light heavyweight champion Jon Jones defended his decision to decline a replacement fight on short notice that forced the promotion to scrap its most recently scheduled pay-per-view event.

UFC 151 on Sept. 1 was canceled after light heavyweight contender Dan Henderson was sidelined with a knee injury and Jones did not want to fight Chael Sonnen on eight days’ notice.

UFC President Dana White bashed Jones for refusing to accept the fight and said calling off the card was one of his “all-time lows.”
