PORTLAND – Cameron McLain had two goals and an assist Saturday night, leading Cheverus to a 5-2 victory against Gorham in a schoolboy hockey opener at Portland Ice Arena.

Jim Hannigan also had two goals with an assist, and sophomore defenseman Matt O’Leary scored his first high school goal for the Stags.

Tucker Buteau and Chris Hardy answered for Gorham.

Jason Blier made 38 saves for the Stags. Justin Broy stopped 26 shots for Gorham.

EDWARD LITTLE 7, SOUTH PORTLAND 0: Branden Dyer had two goals and an assist, and Brendon Croteau also scored twice to lead Edward Little at Portland.

Brendon Pelletier and Trevor Haley each added a goal and an assist.

Kelsey Morton made 51 saves for South Portland.

NOBLE/WELLS 3, PORTLAND/DEERING 2: Ryan Marsh scored from Ryer Smith 10 seconds into overtime to lift Noble/Wells at Rochester, N.H.

Noble/Wells held a 2-1 lead on goals by Connor Pease and Dean Pratt, but Steve Barry pulled the Bulldogs even with 2:19 left in regulation. Mike Fuller also scored for Portland/Deering.

Wyatt Ricker made 34 saves for Noble/Wells.

SCARBOROUGH 2, LEWISTON 1: Cam Loiselle’s power-play goal with 9:01 remaining gave the Red Storm a season-opening win at Saco.

The game was scoreless until Garrett McDonald of Scarborough finished off a three-on-two rush with 1:41 left in the second period. Max Bolduc answered for Lewiston on a rebound in the final minute of the period.

GREELY 6, GARDINER 0: The Rangers opened their five-goal second period with three quick scores and went on to shut out the Tigers at Falmouth.

Kyle Megathlin one-timed a pass from Ted Hart on a power play 3:19 into the second. Hart then finished off a two-on-one break when he one-timed a pass from Pete Hurley at 4:25. Brian Storey put in a hard shot from the point about a minute later.

Hart and Megathlin also scored later in the third, and Will Schad notched his first varsity goal in the third period.

BONNY EAGLE 3, KENNEBUNK 2: Travis Rogers got to a loose puck in front of the net moments before the Rams killed off a two-minute two-man power play and put it in the top of the net to give Bonny Eagle a 3-2 lead five minutes into the third period at Biddeford.

Rogers made it 2-2 with the only goal of the second .

Bryce Fraser had a goal and an assist for Kennebunk.

CAMDEN HILLS 5, YAR-MOUTH 2: Grayson Szumilas scored the first three goals, giving Camden Hills a 3-0 lead by the 6:20 mark of the second period in an opener at Yarmouth.

Szumilas also had an assist. Jack Orne contributed a goal and an assist, and Calvin Robbins the other goal.

David Clemmer and Isaak Dearden scored for Yarmouth.

GRAY-NG/POLAND 6, WINDHAM/SACOPEE VALLEY 0: Ethan Callier scored two goals and assisted on three others in an opener at Gorham.

Nevin Rand added two goals and two assists, Lucas Nickerson had a goal and an assist, and Isaiah Dubois had a goal.

BASKETBALL

FOREST HILLS 76, VINALHAVEN 26: Matthew Turner had 22 points and eight steals, and Derick Ouellette added 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Forest Hills (2-0) over the Vikings (0-2) at Vinalhaven.

Brandon Ouellette chipped in 14 points. Byron Thomas had nine for the Vikings.

FREEPORT 51, NYA 36: Chandler Birmingham scored nine of his 17 points in the first half to help the Falcons take a 25-7 lead against the Panthers at Freeport.

Jack Davenport chipped in 13 points for Freeport. El Tayeb Dahia scored 10 for NYA.

TRAIP ACADEMY 67, SACOPEE VALLEY 20: Atencio Martin scored 13 of his 21 points in the first half as Traip Academy took a 36-8 lead at South Hiram.

Christian Montembeau scored 10 points for the Rangers.

Eric Martineau had nine for Sacopee.

HYDE 52, PINE TREE ACADEMY 28: Ryan Cassidy scored 14 points for the Phoenix (2-0), who used pressure defense to take a 23-6 first-quarter lead against the Breakers (0-1) at Freeport.

Warsame Mohamed added 10 points and Benjamin Burlock had 10 rebounds for Hyde.

Zach Wilday scored 14 points for Pine Tree Academy.
