GORHAM — Haley Jordan scored 14 points to pace a balanced attack for top-seeded University of Southern Maine (25-1), which rolled to a 63-31 win over No. 8 Plymouth State (1-24) in a Little East Conference women’s basketball quarterfinal.

Rebecca Knight added seven points and 10 rebounds and Nicole Garland had nine points for the Huskies, who led 17-0 midway through the first half and 31-8 at the break.

Southern Maine will host the remainder of the tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Huskies will face fifth-seeded Rhode Island College in a semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

 

UNE 62, WENTWORTH 32: Beth Suggs and Lauren Hayden each finished with 13 points and eight rebounds as the top-ranked Nor’easters (22-4) cruised to a win over the eighth-seeded Leopards (11-15) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference quarterfinal at Biddeford.

Kelly Coleman added nine points and six rebounds for the Nor’easters, who will host fifth-seeded Endicott in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday.

 

ST. JOSEPH’S 59, JOHNSON & WALES 45: Morgan Cahill collected her conference-leading 11th double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the third-ranked Monks (16-10) to a win over the sixth-seeded Wildcats (12-14) in a GNAC quarterfinal at Standish.

Lindsay Moore added 10 points and 15 rebounds for the Monks, who led 29-25 at halftime. St. Joseph’s took control with an 8-2 run to open the second half and led by at least nine points the rest of the way.

The Monks will play at second-seeded Suffolk in the semifinals on Thursday.

 

(18) DELAWARE 69, GEORGE MASON 55: Elena Delle Donne scored 18 of her 31 points in the first half and also grabbed nine rebounds in leading the visiting Blue Hens (23-3, 14-0 Colonial Athletic Association) past the Patriots (8-16, 3-10).

 

(21) SYRACUSE 58, RUTGERS 45: Kayla Alexander and Elashier Hall converted three-point plays to key a decisive second-half spurt, and the visiting Orange (22-3, 10-2 Big East) denied Scarlet Knights Coach C. Vivian Stringer her 900th victory.

Stringer, a Hall of Famer in her 42nd season as a head coach, is seeking to become just the fourth women’s coach to reach 900 wins along with Pat Summitt, Jody Conradt and Sylvia Hatchell.

Rutgers (14-11, 5-7) has lost three straight since Stringer earned her 899th career victory against Cincinnati.

BASEBALL

BERRY 6, BATES 0: T.J. Montgomery and Ben Jernigan combined for 10 strikeouts for the Vikings (3-3) and Steve Burke had the lone hit for the Bobcats in their opener at Rome, Ga.

Austin Neely had a two-run triple to key a four-run fourth inning for Berry.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

(1) INDIANA 72, (4) MICHIGAN ST. 68: Victor Oladipo’s go-ahead putback, dunk and free throws in the final minute lifted the top-ranked Hoosiers (24-3, 12-2 Big Ten) over the host Spartans (22-5, 11-3), breaking a first-place tie in the conference.

 

(2) MIAMI 54, VIRGINIA 50: Reggie Johnson made a tie-breaking layup with 5.7 seconds left and the host Hurricanes (22-3, 13-0 ACC) overcame a ragged offensive performance for the second game in a row to beat Virginia (18-8, 8-5).

 

MISSOURI 63, (5) FLORIDA 60: Laurence Bowers had 17 points and the Tigers (19-7, 8-5 SEC) erased a 13-point deficit in the second half to rally past the Gators (21-4, 11-2).

 

(15) BUTLER 68, DU-QUESNE 49: Rotnei Clarke scored 16 points and Khyle Marshall added 14 to lead the Bulldogs (22-5, 9-3 Atlantic 10) past the host Dukes (8-18, 1-11).

 

(17) MARQUETTE 67, SETON HALL 46: Vander Blue scored 19 points and the visiting Golden Eagles (19-6, 10-3 Big East) used a sizeable rebounding advantage to beat the struggling Pirates (13-14, 2-12).

 

SAINT LOUIS 76, (24) VCU 62: Jordair Jett scored all 16 of his points in the second half to help the Billikens (20-5, 9-2 ) win their eighth straight and take sole possession of first place in the Atlantic 10 over VCU (21-6, 9-3).
