GORHAM — A report by a committee charged with studying the benefits of all-day kindergarten does not recommend implementing the program in the town’s elementary schools.
Gorham’s three elementary schools currently offer a half-day kindergarten program, either in the morning or the afternoon.
The kindergarten committee, formed in the fall, releaxsed its findings in advance of a presentation to the school board Wednesday night.
The report says, while a majority of committee members support the concept of all-day kindergarten, it does not recommend taking on the financial burden of implementing the program.
The estimated cost would be $555,000 in the first year and $502,000 every subsequent year, according to the report.
The costs would come from buying supplies and paying additional teachers and education technicians for five more classrooms.
Gorham is one of four districts in Cumberland and York counties that do not offer all-day kindergarten. The others are Cape Elizabeth, Long Island and Marshwood.
The workshop Wednesday starts at 7 p.m. in the Gorham Municipal Center. Public comment will not be allowed.
