About 150 people of all ages whacked at each other with pillows in Monument Square Saturday afternoon at the first Portland Pillow Fight Day.
The fight was part of International Pillow Fight Day, a social media-driven event. Spectators held signs that said “Hugs Not Slugs” and “Make Beds Not War.”
The fighters included adults and children swinging pillows to a background of rock music as an emcee shouted encouragement.
Participants had different reactions to the fight.
“I’m bored,” announced Samantha McDonough, 6, to her parents, Clay and Fey McDonough of Yarmouth.
But Kristin Cameron of Nobleboro, who brought her teenage sons, said hitting a stranger with a pillow is good, simple fun.
“You have an instant connection with someone,” she said.
