NASHUA, N.H. – Sam Butts went 2 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored, and Alex Lorenc added four hits as second-seeded St. Joseph’s (27-10) cruised to a 7-2 win over top-seeded Johnson & Wales (27-13) in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference baseball tournament Saturday afternoon.
Tyler Laverriere and Cory McNamara combined on a two-hitter for the Monks, who will have two chances to win the championship Sunday against Suffolk.
MAINE SPLITS WITH HARTFORD: Michael Fransoso broke the all-time stolen base record for the Black Bears (25-16, 15-5 America East) while helping Maine to a 5-3 victory in the opener before Hartford (13-27, 10-10) won the second game 3-1 at Orono.
Fransoso broke Mark Sweeney’s record with his 70th stolen base and scored twice in Game 1. Brian Doran drove in three runs, including a two-run single during a four-run rally in the sixth, and Tommy Lawrence (8-2) worked 61/3 innings for his seventh consecutive win.
A.J. Bazdanes went eight innings, struck out 10 and allowed only one earned run in the Game 2 loss.
USM SWEEPS KEENE STATE: Forrest Chadwick recorded a save in the first game and had five RBI in Game 2 to help the Huskies (27-6, 9-1 Little East) post 4-1 and 15-1 victories over Keene State (18-18, 7-5) at Gorham.
BOWDOIN SPLITS WITH TUFTS: Christian Martin gave up just two singles and struck out seven over 52/3 innings to lead the Polar Bears (22-11, 8-4 NESCAC East) to a 4-0 win over the Jumbos (21-11, 7-5) in the opener at Medford, Mass.
Tufts won Game 2, 6-1.
BATES SWEEPS COLBY: Kevin McGregor’s two-run single and Nate Pajka’s two-run double highlighted a sixth-inning rally in the opener, and Jeff Gunn hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the sixth inning of Game 2 as the Bobcats (15-14, 5-7 NESCAC East) swept the Mules (9-18, 2-10), winning 5-3 and 7-2 at Lewiston.
SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 4, NHTI 1: Daniel French pitched a three-hitter to lead the Seawolves (22-20-1) in the championship game of the Yankee Small College Conference tournament at South Portland.
ST. JOSEPH’S 4, ST. JOSEPH (Conn.) 0: Rae-Marie Copan pitched a two-hitter, Lindsay Moore drove in two runs and the fourth-seeded Monks (32-9) advanced to the finals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament with a win over the No. 3 Blue Jays (32-11) at West Hartford, Conn.
BU SWEEPS MAINE: Jean Stevens hit her league-leading 13th home run, but the Black Bears (7-36, 3-11 America East) lost 2-0 and 9-5 against the Terriers (18-23-1, 6-6) at Boston.
USM SWEEPS UMASS-DARTMOUTH: Jesse Hutchins pitched a seven-hitter and drove in a run as the Huskies (9-31, 4-10 Little East) won the opener 8-5 against the Corsairs (11-27, 3-11) before completing the doubleheader sweep with a 9-0 victory at Gorham.
Katie Davis added two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in Game 1. Kristen Duross, Hutchins and Stefanie Stockwell each had an RBI during a seven-run third inning in Game 2.
BOWDOIN SPLITS WITH BRANDEIS: Melissa DellaTorre tossed a one-hitter as Bowdoin (28-12) won 3-0 in a doubleheader opener before losing 5-2 to Brandeis (22-14) in the second game at Waltham, Mass.
TRINITY SWEEPS BATES: Christina Galese hit a grand slam in the opener and pitcher Hannah King went the distance in both games for the Bantams (15-17, 7-5 NESCAC) against the Bobcats (9-17, 1-11), winning 9-1 in five innings and 7-4 in eight innings at Lewiston.
TUFTS SWEEPS COLBY: Tufts (35-2, 12-0 NESCAC) got shutouts from Rebecca DiBiase and Aly Moskowitz in 7-0 and 2-0 wins against the Mules (11-17, 2-10) at Medford, Mass.
