ELMIRA, N.Y. – Firefighters and medics were unable to save the lives of four people pulled from a burning home in upstate New York.
The blaze swept through a two-story home on a tidy block in the riverside city of Elmira at around 9:20 p.m. Friday. Fire officials said the building was completely engulfed in flame when they arrived. Four victims were rushed to the hospital, but none survived, officials said Saturday.
Police didn’t immediately release the names or ages of the victims or confirm reports by neighbors that children were among the dead.
A neighbor who lives across the street, Glen Bolt, 72, told the Elmira Star-Gazette that he ran across the street when he saw flames pouring out of the home’s windows and front door.
“Me and the neighbor there busted the windows out, hoping the kids would come through that window,” Bolt said. “But by that time the smoke had already got them.”
The cause and circumstances of the fire were under investigation.
