LIMERICK — A teenager from East Waterboro was hospitalized in serious condition Friday night after a car crash in which rescuers had to use the “jaws of life” to free her from her car, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 6:30 p.m. near Alpha Sports on Route 5, which is Sokokis Trail in that area, the York County Sheriff’s Office said.

Tyler Jalbert, 19, was driving north on Route 5 and Wayne Parker, 71, of Randolph, N.H., was driving south. Deputies said they believe that speed and distracted driving may have played a role in the crash, but haven’t released specifics on what happened.

Jalbert was trapped in her car for more than an hour, then was taken by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Deputies said Parker was taken to Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford with injuries that were described as not life-threatening.

Route 5 was closed while an accident reconstruction team examined evidence, the sheriff’s office said.
