Lindsey Poirier made a pregame determination.
Play with speed.
The Marshwood High field hockey star turned determination and two dynamic rushes up the middle of the field, with some fancy stick-handling included, into two quick first-half goals to lead the Hawks to Wednesday night’s 3-0 win against No. 5 Cheverus in a Western A quarterfinal game at Deering High’s turf field.
“Speed is key on turf. We love turf. We eat it up. Honestly we came out with so much fire. That was just an amazing game and I’m so proud of everyone,” Poirier said.
Poirier’s drive set up Ashley Hickey’s tip goal with 20:57 to play.
Hickey said that there have been times when she’s backed away when Poirier is getting ready to let a shot go in the penalty circle.
“Usually I’m like, ‘OK, she’s got this. She can do it on her own,’ because I’ve seen her do it so many times by herself,” Hickey said. “She always says you need to get on (the goalie’s) pads. You need to do this because you’ll score. When I saw her coming down I booked it over to pads and then I tipped it over. I was so excited. It actually worked.”
Three minutes later, Poirier made a similar rush through the middle of the field and this time banged the backboard behind Cheverus goalie Libby DesRuisseaux (6 saves) with her shot for a 2-0 lead with 17:56 left in the half.
Marshwood’s Elaine Bachelder scored on a rifled penalty corner shot with 21:23 left in the second half.
Hawk goalie Cassidy Smith made one save, in the final minute, for the shutout.
It is the first time No. 4 Marshwood (13-3) beat Cheverus (11-3-1).
Up next for the Hawks is another yet-to-be-slain giant in Western Class A: No. 1 Scarborough (14-0-1).
Scarborough will host the regional semifinal at 1 p.m. Saturday. Scarborough won the regular season game 2-1.
“We’ll get back to practice tomorrow which I’m glad about because I don’t want this season to end,” Marshwood Coach Lisa Truesdale said.
Marshwood controlled the pace from the opening faceoff, building statistical edges of 9-2 in shots and 7-5 in penalty corners.
