A Winthrop woman died Monday four days after she was badly injured in a crash on U.S. Route 202 that claimed the life of her husband.

Patricia St. Laurent, 74, died Monday afternoon at Central Maine Medical Center where she had been in critical condition since the Thursday crash.

“She died just a few minutes ago,” St. Laurent’s daughter-in-law, Alissa St. Laurent, said shortly after 2 p.m. Monday.

Winthrop Police Chief Joseph Young confirmed the death.

St. Laurent was flown to the hospital Thursday morning after the van she was riding in was hit from behind by a box truck on U.S. Route 202. St. Laurent’s husband, 80-year-old Napoleon Richard St. Laurent, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the box truck, Jeffrey Ray, 44, of Scarborough, also was flown to CMMC after the crash. He was no longer at the hospital Friday afternoon, according to the representative.

The crash occurred shortly before 9 a.m. as the St. Laurents’ 1996 Ford E-150 van was stopped in the eastbound lane waiting to make a left turn onto Royal Street. Ray, driving a 2007 Mitsubishi box truck east on U.S. 202, hit the van from behind, Young said. Winthrop Police Chief Joseph Young said the impact pushed both vehicles into the right-side guard rail and down the road before coming to rest against the guardrail.
