WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Ashleigh Roberts scored eight of her 13 points in the final three minutes Wednesday as the University of Maine topped Hartford 60-56 in an America East women’s basketball game to end an 18-game losing streak to the Hawks, dating to 2004.
Roberts’ inside shot tied the game at 50 with 3:08 to play. After a missed Hartford jumper, Maine (14-11, 8-4 AE) worked deep into the shot clock with Sophie Weckstrom finding Mikaela Gustafsson for a foul-line jumper as the shot clock buzzer sounded, putting the Black Bears ahead 52-50.
Following a Hartford free throw, Roberts made a move in the post to extend the Black Bears’ lead to 54-51. Roberts missed a free throw after Maine got the ball back on Liz Wood’s steal, but grabbed her own rebound. She was fouled again and converted a pair of free throws before Weckstrom’s three-point play gave Maine a 59-53 lead with 8 seconds left.
Deanna Mayza scored 17 for the Hawks (9-15, 6-5).
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 82, GORDON COLLEGE 41: The Nor’easters (20-2, 14-1 Commonwealth Coast) opened the game with a 23-1 run on their way to a victory over the Fighting Scots (5-17, 1-14) at Biddeford.
Alanna Vose scored 17 of her career-high 22 points in the first half for UNE, which has won eight straight.
CENTRAL MAINE C.C. 68, SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 55: Laura Soohey scored 17 points to lead the Mustangs (22-2, 14-0) to their second consecutive perfect YSCC regular season with a victory over Southern Maine CC (17-8, 12-3) in Auburn.
Danielle McCusker led the Seawolves with 16 points.
HARTFORD 91, MAINE 79: Taylor Dyson drained five 3-pointers and Evan Cooper added a pair to score 16 points apiece as the Hawks (12-14, 6-5 America East) topped the Black Bears (5-19, 3-9) at Orono.
Garet Beale scored a career-high 18 for the Black Bears.
