A section of Cumberland Avenue outside Portland High School was closed to traffic Wednesday morning as a student group, with assistance from city police and fire department personnel, above, staged a simulated car crash. The mock accident, which created the scenario of a fatal collision with multiple injured survivors, was sponsored by the school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions to show the consequences of making bad choices, either while behind the wheel or by riding with drivers who shouldn’t be. Police and fire department officials responded to the accident between Elm and Chestnut streets as they would have in a real emergency. The street was reopened to traffic after three hours.
