It’s that time of year again: 30 days of training bears to visit baiting sites filled to overflowing with greasy doughnuts and aromatic food waste.
July 27 was the start of the campaign to bait and kill Maine bears. It gives hunters the chance to shoot, but not always to follow through to ensure that the bears shot are actually dead and not lying in the woods, horribly injured, until they die a cruel death.
Sportsmanship? I think not. Sportsmanship does not allow animals of any kind to suffer. Indiscriminate killing of bears at bait spots often kills sows that have cubs waiting for them to return.
Please let 2014 be the last bear-baiting season in our state. Please vote “yes” in November for Maine’s future stance to eliminate bear baiting.
