A Maine television station has canceled a debate in the race for the 2nd Congressional District seat after Democrat Emily Cain said she wouldn’t attend.

WMTW-TV was planning to host a debate between Cain and Republican Bruce Poliquin next Tuesday.

WMTW said Cain told the station Thursday she will skip the debate because independent Blaine Richardson wasn’t invited.

The station said Richardson doesn’t meet its criteria for debates because he hasn’t raised enough money and is polling in the single digits, among other things.

WMTW News Director Amy Beveridge said after Cain’s announcement that the station will no longer host the debate.

The three candidates will meet in a debate at 7:30 tonight that will air on WCSH-TV in Portland and WLBZ-TV in Bangor.
