John Tracy, a senior captain for Casco Bay Lines, keeps watch while operating the Peak’s Island ferry. “Every day something happens, you’re prepared for anything,” he says of his job. “I have a great crew, but the weather is always a challenge.

“We operate year round, but the state owns the docks and they have a wind perimeter. If the wind is blowing at 30 knots sustained on the dock, then we can’t start.”

This time of year, he said, “We’re getting down to the year rounders. (But) folks are staying longer, and they’re coming earlier. You come on a weekend now in winter, and it’s still pretty busy.”
