Vets On The Water, an initiative that provides a day of fishing, sailing or scenic cruising for disabled veterans, active duty military and Gold Star family members, was able to provide 150 complimentary trips this past summer. Each Monday, Maine vets were treated to a day on Damariscotta, Great Pond and Mooselookmeguntic lakes and Penobscot Bay, leaving from Camden, Rockland or Rockport harbors. Volunteers provided the watercraft and a health care professional was on each trip. Bag lunches and beverages were also donated. Fishing and pontoon trips were provided to Camp Wavus Veteran’s Programs, Embrace A Vet Retreats and the Travis Mills Foundation’s National Veterans Family Center.

This winter, three ice fishing houses will be constructed by Knox County firefighters at the Camden, Rockland and Rockport fire stations to be placed on Damariscotta Lake. Call 542-3590 for more information or visit Vets on the Water Facebook page.

Volunteers are needed to help conduct a survey of Maine’s homeless veterans on Jan. 28. The “point in time” survey located 98 individuals in 2014 and is hoping to have a volunteer in every Maine town to conduct the count in 2015. Training is provided and several organizations participate. To sign up, or for more information, contact Jerry DeWitt at 783-4663 ext. 228 or jdewitt@tcmhs.org or Janice Lara-Hewey at jlarahewey@ccmaine.org or call 272-9210. Participate in the survey by calling 1-800-377-5709 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Jan. 28 through Jan. 30.
