A Rockport man was arrested and charged with drunken driving and leaving the scene of a fatal accident after his sport utility vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian Friday evening in Rockland, police said.

Police said Daniel Cormier, 35, of Rockland and Owls Head was hit while he was walking south along the side of Camden Street near Pizza Hut about 5:30 p.m. in the rain.

Police said Jeremy S. Stone, 40, of Rockport struck Cormier with the right front of his Jeep Cherokee and then fled the scene. Police said Stone was headed south.

Stone was arrested about a half-hour later at the home of a friend. Rockland Deputy Chief Chris Young said one of Stone’s friends reported the accident and Stone’s whereabouts.

Cormier was pronounced dead at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Young said Stone may face additional charges. He is being held at Knox County Jail on $11,000 bail. Stone also is being held on two outstanding warrants for unspecified charges from Waldo County.
