The Portland Water District is dealing with three water main breaks in greater Portland, two of which are likely to cause traffic disruptions during the evening commute.

Crews were alerted to a new water main break at 2:45 p.m. on Ocean Street in South Portland between Sawyer Street and Kayler Road. Traffic will be reduced to one lane there through the evening commute and repairs won’t be complete until about 11:45 p.m. though water should be restored for the 15 customers affected by 10 p.m.

Crews also responded to a break at 608 Bridgton Road in Westbrook, where workers are able to work from an adjacent parking area so traffic on the busy thoroughfare is not affected.

A second water main break is being repaired in Portland at the corner of Eastern Promenade and Quebec Street, closing the Promenade between Turner and Melbourne streets.

District officials say intense cold in January has led to a higher than normal number of water line breaks.
