Portland police are searching for the driver of a 2012 Toyota sedan who crashed into the garage of a house at 295 Summit St. early Wednesday and then fled, leaving the car wedged in the badly damaged corner of the building.

Randolph Hodsdon said he was away for the night but his wife was asleep at home when she was awakened about 1 a.m. by a huge crashing sound.

“She opened the door and peeked out. There was a car sticking out of the garage,” Hodsdon said. “She called 911 in hysterics, thinking there could be somebody dead in the car.”

When police arrived, they found that the driver had fled. They called in a police dog but didn’t find the driver.

Police said Thursday that they are still searching for the driver and would not identify the car’s owner.

Hodsdon’s house is across Summit Street from the end of Clayton Street, and he suspects the driver failed to slow down and stop for the stop sign there.

The garage probably would have toppled when the car was removed, he said, but a previous owner had a steel I-beam installed, which supported the roof.
