Portland Police determined that a suspicious item found in a mail drop box in the Old Port Friday morning was a smoke alarm that someone dropped into the box.
The item drew attention because it was beeping.
Portland police and the U.S. Postal Service responded to the beeping box at the corner of Fore and Exchange streets.
The incident was reported just after 9 a.m. Friday.
