Three people were hurt Friday when the car they were riding in slid off the Maine Turnpike and into a swampy area, said Maine State Police.

The crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. when there was a mechanical failure in one wheel of the car, which was going south in Gray, said Cpl. Lance McCleish.

He said the driver lost control of the car, hit the center guardrail and then skidded across the highway and off the right side, then went about 20 feet down an embankment, crossed a ditch and ended up on swampy land.

McCleish said all three people in the car were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, but their injuries were considered minor.

No charges are expected to be filed, McCleish said.
