A teenage skier was taken by ambulance Sunday afternoon to a Rumford hospital after falling and getting hurt in what officials at Black Mountain Ski Resort described as a “pond-skimming accident.”

General Manager Jim Carter said the girl was completing a run at the base of the mountain when she attempted to skim across a pond of water on her skis.

Carter said the girl fell and landed on her side. She did not appear to have a suffered a serious injury, but Carter said the ski patrol recommended she be checked out at Rumford Hospital. He was unable to provide her identity, but did say she attends high school.

“She just got the wind knocked out of her,” Carter said.

Carter said each year Black Mountain hosts a family fun weekend and creates a small pond – about 75 feet in length and 3 feet deep – for its pond skimming event. In pond skimming, skiers or snowboarders travel down a course and attempt to cross a pool of water at the base of the mountain without falling.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Carter said.

Black Mountain, which is located on Glover Road in Rumford, offers 35 trails. Carter said the ski area is planning to remain open until April 12.
