Maine State Police and Yarmouth police sent several cruisers to the scene of a fight on Interstate 295 northbound in Yarmouth on Tuesday afternoon.

Though no one was arrested, state police Sgt. Robert Burke said the altercation in the breakdown lane started with a disagreement over the speed at which a used car was being driven during a test drive.

Burke said a Portland family – two parents and their adult son – were test driving a vehicle from Dubai Auto Sales, at 710 Forest Ave., when they got into an argument with a mechanic from the dealership who went with them on their test drive.

“(The mechanic) felt they were going too fast so he called his manager,” Burke said.

The family pulled over to the side of the road around 3:30 p.m. and argued with the mechanic. The manager drove to Yarmouth, and the fight escalated when he arrived. Burke was not sure if punches were thrown.

“They were scuffling when I got there,” Burke said. “But it was hard to figure out what was happening because there was a language barrier on both sides.”

Yarmouth police drove the family to the Cumberland Farms store on Route 1, where they got a taxi back to Portland. But the fight resumed in Portland when the family tried to get their own car at the dealership, Burke said.

State police and Portland police went to Dubai Motors and broke up that squabble. Burke said a report that someone displayed a weapon at the dealership turned out to be unfounded.

No one was arrested.
