More than 2,000 Wal-Mart workers in Maine received raises this week.

According to a news release from the company, 2,342 Maine employees received pay raises, making good on a February announcement that the company would adopt a new minimum wage of $9.

The new average full-time hourly wage for Wal-Mart associates in Maine is $13.54; previously it was $13.50.

Wal-Mart is the second-largest employer in Maine, with more than 6,700 workers. The state’s minimum wage is $7.50 per hour.

The company operates 25 stores in Maine, including three Sam’s Clubs, which are also covered by the new pay policy.

By February 2016 all current associates will earn at least $10 per hour, according to the company.

The announcement of a companywide pay raise set off a chain reaction among other retailers, such as TJ Maxx and Marshall’s, that said they would also adopt a $9 per hour minimum wage.
