AUGUSTA – Maine Republicans have defeated a measure that sought to prevent establishments from using smaller glasses to sell beers that are advertised as pints.
The Republican-led Senate voted 20-14 to sustain Gov. Paul LePage’s veto of the bill on Thursday.
It would have mandated that when bars and restaurants advertise that a beer is a pint, they sell it in a glass that’s at least 16 ounces.
Democratic Sen. John Patrick, who introduced the bill, said some establishments use 14-ounce glasses to serve beer that they advertise as pints. He said the bill would ensure customers get what they pay for.
But LePage and some Republican lawmakers said it was unnecessary because the state has consumer protection laws. They said the mandate would hurt already over-regulated businesses.
