Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start to summer and this upcoming weekend the weather will cooperate. Since I know most of you want sunshine and pleasant conditions, I’ll use terms like great weekend, perfect for outdoor activities, nice start to summer etc. to describe the upcoming forecast.

Cloudy Friday
Tomorrow won’t be even close to a washout, but there is the risk of showers and even a thunderstorm. A cold front crossing the area during the day will bring some of those showers to a few areas. A larger and steadier area of rain will remain south of New England, but brush parts of Cape Cod and the islands with a period of rain.

In total, little or no accumulated rain will fall anywhere except in isolated areas. A review of the map above, which give the projected total rainfall from tomorrow’s showers, shows not much rain.

Cool Mornings
Saturday through Monday is looking dry and sunny with cool mornings and seasonably warm afternoons. Saturday morning might bring a touch of frost for the coldest spots, but a widespread late frost isn’t going to happen. Winds will be a bit too brisk all night and the air mass while certainly cold, won’t support frosty conditions for most of you.

Highs Saturday will be in the 60s across New England. With the strong May sunshine and light winds, it will feel milder than this. On Sunday, it becomes milder with 70s more common. This same temperature regime should last into Memorial Day. If you are having a barbecue any time from Saturday through Monday rain will not be an issue.

Drought Worsens
I admit I have been complaining about the lack of rain for a month. As a huge gardener and plant enthusiast the lack of rain is worrisome. This morning a large area of New England from Portland to Bridgeport in Connecticut has been upgraded to a moderate drought. This only serves to illustrate the lack of rain is becoming more acute. While some models do indicate some chances of rain next week, this may come at a price.

Heat and humidity will be building during the middle of next week. It’s too early to determine just how hot we are going to be next week, but as I tweeted several days ago, I would use this weekend to ensure your cooling system is in good working order. Even if this round of summer conditions stays south of Maine, you know it’s coming eventually.
